What Is a Hook?

A hook is the opening 5–15 seconds of a video, engineered to make leaving feel expensive. Effective hooks open a loop the viewer needs closed: the stakes hook ("In 2019 this company was worth $40B; by 2021 it didn't exist"), the pattern interrupt ("Everything you've heard about X is backwards"), or the cold open (starting mid-story at maximum tension). First-30-second retention above 70% is the working standard for a successful hook. Write hooks last, after you know the video's best moment.
